It’s comedy on the inside
CALLING
Old Red Lion Theatre
DEBORAH Espect’s portrayal of the three lost souls in the mental institution brews a black comedy out of serious subject, without stooping to condescension. We are introduced to the hospital patients, our three main characters David, Rebecca and Scott, and the many others who are inside the hospital, all harbouring their own problems but keen to downplay them against the peers.
Rebecca defends her friend with the line: “David is not mad ’cos he doesn’t eat his own shit – but he did try to kill his Mum.”
A strong cast brings out the humour in the script. Jenny Harold plays the instantly likeable 17 year-old Rebecca and Matt Prendergast portrays Scott with a fine balance of vulnerability and intrigue. “How hard can it be to write? Even Jordan does it!” says inmate Rebecca at one point. Indeed, Espect makes writing an insightful, humorous and truthful play look easy.
A simple yet effective triumph for the joinedupwriters team. Until July 28
