Review Talib Kweli at the Jazz Cafe
By Roisin Gadelrab

REVERED New York rapper Talib Kweli treated a full house to a back catalogue of classic hip hop tracks that took every devoted follower on a trip down memory lane last week.
For two nights only the Jazz Cafe was transformed into Brooklyn as Kweli brought his old school rap to the Camden masses.
Raising the roof with classics such as Get By, I Try and Down for the Count, the hip hop pioneer, who carved a name out for himself with his collaborations with rap legend Mos Def in the late 1990s, hypnotised a transfixed army of followers, who demonstrated their respect with the traditional arm waving, two-stepping, head nod. Kweli¹s bold style proved no other artist¹s work was too precious to be messed with, working in hooks from the Eurythmics and Al Green along the way.
And for those ready to take on the new stuff, there was a healthy sprinkle of tracks from his new album Eardrum, with last year¹s single Listen a crowd favourite. Kweli chose his accomplice well, although he was almost eclipsed by Independent Music Awards best hip hop female artist of the year 2005 Jean Grae who was gravely in danger of stealing the show.
