The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS Published: 19 July 2007
SOMETHING funny came in the post this week. Following a request under the Freedom of Information Act, I discovered there was something of a spat between the Camden Crawl organisers and the police.
The Crawl is a massive music festival that takes place in Camden Town every year, attracting up to 10,000 people in a day. This year Amy Winehouse and Ash headlined in secret gigs only announced on the day.
In the email-trail passed on to Grooves, it appears the police were none too happy at the trickle of information being passed their way.
Although the names have been blackened out, a Crawl honcho rushed off an email in reply. “I wasn’t trying to be misleading at all,” the writer stuttered. “I just wasn’t sure how au fait you’d be with band names and whether it would mean anything to
you but I totally take your point.”
Clearly, the point being made by the cops was “how can we police this event if we don’t know how many people to expect at which venue?”
Cue the Crawl organisers tipping them off on what acts they thought would attract the biggest numbers on the day: bee-hived star Amy Winehouse, 1990s rock-veterans Ash, Manc singer-songwriter Cherry Ghost, and indie hitsters Hot Club de Paris and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
