Los Meurtos, who perform this Sunday
C’est gratuit – if you’re French
PREVIEW: ROCKET SURGERY Dublin Castle
I CAN just see it now. In the old days you’d have to memorise your birthday, repeat it like a mantra, and then swear you’re 18 when you get to the door. But the Bugbear Team, who have been steering the musical helm at the Dublin Castle for years, have come up with something completely new. Get in line, and repeat after me: “Ah Ahm Frinch, but ah ahhm.”
That’s right, until the end of July, if you’re French, you can get in free to their new nationality-themed Sunday nights at the DC in Parkway, Camden Town.
But I’m only kidding about the fake accent thing. “You have to show ID,” warns Bugbear man Tony Gleed. “You can’t just come in with a beret and a string of onions.”
Next month it’s Spain, and after that it’s Italy.
The idea is aimed at livening up what is usually a quiet period on the London scene. Tony explains: “It’s to kick- start the summer, which is always quieter because the students are away and the festivals are on.”
And the Rocket Surgery night is not just for foreigners either: you can get in for free on any Sunday if you work in the NHS or drive the buses, Tubes or trains. And if weekends are out, the same night is staged at Islington’s Hope & Anchor on Mondays, Hoxton’s 333 bar on Wednesdays, and once a month at Punk in Soho.
So if your mother’s always told you to pull a Frenchie, here’s your chance – and the Dublin’s open until 2am, so there’s excuse.
