Pick of the Indies
INSIDE The Smiths, at the Renoir this evening (Thursday) is the story of the seminal 1980s band The Smiths – a masterclass in misery or the greatest thing to ever come out of Manchester, depending on your standpoint. Lesser-known band members Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, respectively the Smiths’ bass player and drummer, chronicle the history of the band through candid interviews which offer an insight into the private life of one of Britain’s most influential bands. Both Rourke and Joyce will be at the screening to answer questions.
THERE’S a lot more to Indian cinema than Bollywood as the India Now festival hopes to make clear. The Barbican kicks off the film celebration side on Saturday with a season of films from Kerala, the lush southern state also known as God’s Own Country. Topics covered include teenage sexuality, fundamentalism, the new-found affluence of the many Keralite’s who leave to work abroad and the importance of Malayalee culture. ONE for film buffs – a double bill of Jean Cocteau’s Orpheus and Alan Resnais’ Hiroshima Mon Amour at the Curzon Mayfair on Sunday. For something a little easier to digest, try Fargo at the Everyman Hampstead instead, with Frances McDormand’s Oscar-winning performance as the wonderfully named pregnant Minnesota sheriff Marge Gunderson. It’s a treat.
