Shane, played by Josh Hutcherson, gets to know firefighting pooch Rexxx
Fire? Just paw cold water on it
FIREHOUSE DOG
Directed by Todd Holland
Certificate PG
IF there has to be a spot of midsummer madness, then here it is, folks. Step up, Josh Hutcherson, the likeable kid from Bridge to Terabithia in the role of Shane, whose father Connor (Bruce Greenwood) is captain of the local fire brigade known as “Engine Co. 55”.
They’re a luckless inner city outfit nicknamed “Dogpatch”, and the council wants to shut them down. Add to that a second storyline of an arsonist burning down warehouses, the fact that Shane’s uncle has already perished in a blaze, and so far so good for a family film with some suspense and a lotta heart thrown in.
Until…in drops – literally, from a plane, when a stunt goes wrong – a pampered Hollywood dog star called Rexxx, an Irish terrier who has featured in films like Jurassic Bark, wearing sunglasses and able to slide down fire poles.
The pooch has also been given computer-generated human expressions, burps a lot, and poops in the wrong places. At least he proves he can protect lives, and becomes part of the fire team’s efforts to save the station.
But if the film sets out to be a story of a dog that finds love and companionship with a young boy – bring back Lassie, I say!
