Holloway's road to success story
INTERVIEW - THE HOLLOWAYS
THE Holloways formed in Nambucca in Holloway Road in 2004. The indie rock foursome were the talk of the Camden Crawl in April. Charlotte Chambers spoke to bassist Bryn. See them at Tin Pan Alley on Sunday July 16 and the Garage on Wednesday July 19.
Q: Why couldn’t I get into your Camden Crawl gig?
Because we were playing the smallest venue and we’ve got quite a fanatical fanbase, particularly anywhere near the Holloway road. It was a struggle for us to get through – I had to tell people I was in the band!
Q: Who’s the best looking fan you’ve ever met and did you ask them out?
We meet a lot, but the ones who talk to you tend to be the less goodlooking ones – the goodlooking ones think you will talk to them. But by the time I’m finished talking to the ugly ones they gone!
Q: What do you think of the Islington/Camden music scene?
It’s going through a good patch. When I first moved to London seven years ago, it was dying – it was all DJ’s – but now it’s going the opposite way, all the venues are putting stages in. Take Colour bar [in Inverness Street, Camden Town], they’ve suddenly said ‘Oh, we’ll have bands now’ – it used to be house central.
Q: Best piece of advice from a famous person?
Paul Smith – singer from Maximo Park – told us to “keep going” at a point when none of us had jobs or money. He said “I was like that, no money, the band were doing nothing”, and then things changed.
