A modern Superman

Superman
Directed by Bryan Singer
Certificate 12A

The problem is he is just too powerful: he can do the faster than a speeding bullet, super sight, super hearing, nothing can stop me business and it is only a pile of Kryptonite rock from outer space can hurt him. Where is the fun in that?
It seems director Bryan Singer realises this, and has therefore decided to make a film that relies heavily on scenes of things going crash-bang-wallop, decides not take itself seriously and has resulted in a thoroughly modern, if some what tongue-in-cheek, take on the tale.
We join the story to discover that Superman has been out of town for five long years.
So where has he been? Scouring the universe for the remains of Planet Krypton and ignoring the woes in Metropolis, that’s where.
In the meantime Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has won the Pultizer and found the time to become a mum. one. In fact, life post-Superman is a lot less complicated for the award-winning reporter.
But then, just when she really needs her ex to pop up, Superman doesn’t let her down.
And once back on the planet, he starts setting about giving Metropolis a spring clean of all the disasters that have been waiting to happen since he went off.
But if Superman is around, there is always a ridiculous pantomine megalomanic mogul lurking near-by: and this updated tale has Kevin Spacey revelling in a role that he wears like a beautifully tailored suit. Evil baddie Lex Luthor has come up with a plan: grow an island of Kryptonite in the middle of the Atlantic, flood the rest of the planet and hey presto! He’s the boss of the world..
Brandon Routh as the man in tights is a snappy turn: he juts his chin, puffs his chest and is as charming as any adopted parents from the Mid West would want their son to be.
Throw in some special effects that look like they have been borrowed directly from the comic book art that spawned our hero, and you get the feeling Singer has managed to cleave from a tired franchise a new lease of life for a dated super hero.
