The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS Published: 12 July 2007
IT'S that time of year. Festivals and gigs in palatial home county estates. But it’s not just the minted of Surrey who will be out and about with their wicker picnic set. You, yes you, skinted of London, can also indulge in crackly speakers and rip off hot dogs. Because this is the weekend that not one but two festivals – and probably more but I can’t be bothered to trawl the net – are being staged. And all for free, friends. Highlights at the Rise festival in Finsbury Park include Kelis (will her milkshake bring you to the yard?), Sway and old reggae pensioners the Skatalites. While over at the Tin Pan Alley in Soho you’ll be lucky to catch Scroobius Pip vs Dan le Sac.
And on July 28 a month-long festival, SCP Live, kicks off at St Christopher’s Place – a tidy back street tucked away off Oxford Street. It is probably the most eclectic of the London festival line-ups, and a touch more grown up, with a generous array of world music, jazz, classical and blues. The musical showcases will start at lunchtimes and go on into the evening.
Who needs mud, toilet queues and gruelling half-mile journeys that take three hours when you can see it all in London and still be home in time for Match of the Day?
