PREVIEW: RISE FESTIVAL
by Mark Blunden
KELIS will be hoping her “milkshake” attracts plenty of boys to the Rise: London United festival in Finsbury Park on Sunday. The American chart-topper will join Camden Town soul pioneer Jazzie B and Mobo-winning
R’n’B everywoman Jamelia at the free anti-racism event. Also on the bill are St Etienne, the Noisettes, Jamaican ska legends the Skatalites, rapper K’naan and a wealth of world music from Morocco to Cuba.
The festival, founded in 1996, is organised by the Mayor of London, Trades Union Congress and National Assembly Against Racism.
Revellers will also have the chance to see Beardyman, the UK Beatboxing champion and Frankie Paul, touted as the “Jamaican Stevie Wonder”.
* The festival runs from 12noon until 8.30pm. For more information, go to www.risefestival.org/
