Mariinsky Theatre visits the London Coliseum
THE London Coliseum has been going through troubled times recently with one thing and another but it continues to produce entertaining operas.
Later this month the theatre is welcoming the Mariinsky Theatre – which is presenting a season of operas and ballets by Shostakovich (pictured), which all specialise in satire and humour.
These are not works that have often been performed in London but deal with subject matter that remains highly relevant – including football, sex and war. Could there be anything more contemporary?
The season begins on July 20 with The Noise, based on Gogol’s satirical classic and continues with Moscow, Cheryomuskhi, Katerina Izmaylova, The Young Lady and the Hooliga, The Bedbuy and Leningrad Symphony.
On July 28 there is The Golden Age, Shostakovich’s ballet on football. It was a subject close to the composer’s heart as he was a qualified referee.
This is bound to be a successful so tickets are likely to sell out fast. Ring 0870 145 0200.
