A future we should avoid?
THE FUTURE
Pentameters Theatre
THE Future, for writer and NHS medic Andrew Harrison, is the arrival of a wonder drug allowing eternal youth. The concept is intriguing. But, aside from the scientific issues raised, it left me wanting more. This is essentially an unresolved work.
Basing his play on a real discovery by Californian scientists who found they could increase the lifespan of a worm by controlling one of its genes, Harrison bravely translated these effects on to six friends.
The action takes place in the living room of Susan (Clareine Cronin) and Isaac (David Sayers) where, dinner party after dinner party, we watch attitudes change and cracks appear in relationships once seemingly solid.
The questions raised by the play’s interesting theme are never fully addressed, meaning this ambitious and controversial project never quite carries through with the conviction required. Until July 21
