Bridgetower opera marks slave trade anniversary
PREVIEW: BRIDGETOWER – A FABLE OF 1807 LSO St Luke's
A VERY interesting production is at LSO St Luke’s this week is a new opera by Julian Joseph and Mike Phillips, marking the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act. Joseph is one of the country’s leading jazz pianists and band leaders and writer Mike Phillips provides the libretto of a work that promises to be a real treasure, full of great jazz and classical music and an inspiring tale.
Bridgetower – A Fable of 1807 tells the story of George Bridgetower, the son of an Abyssinian ex-slave and a violin prodigy who settled in London under the patronage of the royal family and was the original dedicatee of Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata.
Jamal Hope and Isaac Cobbinah share the role of 10-year-old George Bridgetower; the wonderful jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth is Mary Prince and Julian Joseph stars as Beethoven.
The production also includes the English Touring Opera and the LSO St Luke’s Community Choir, with the Julian Joseph Big Band.
