The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS Published: 5 July 2007
IT’S not Keisha from the Sugababes, or Luke from the Kooks, or even Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist from The Doors and the grumpiest star ever interviewed on this page. No, the Grooves interview that tops our Camden New Journal website search poll nearly every week is a bit closer to home. It is, in fact, Ndubz, a soulful rap trio made up of Tulisa, Dappy and Faze: the Camden Town version of The Black Eyed Peas.
While they were moving on to bigger things when I spoke to them a year ago, including the release of their debut album, they are now booked to play the O2 venue on Friday July 6, in a fundraiser for former Arsenal striker Kanu’s heart charity.
Another artist who’s been doing it for years will be paying Camden Town a visit at the end of the month. Jimmy Cliff – the highlight of last year’s Lovebox festival – is playing the Jazz Café on July 30 and 31.
And cult band The Fall – the evergreen Mark E Smith was one of John Peel’s favourite artists – will be in residency at the Islington Academy in two weeks’ time.
Last but not least, Kentish Town underground star Nyomi Gray, aka Ny, is releasing her second mix tape, Split Endz Vol II, on Monday. Buy it at www.ukrecordings. com.
