CONDUCTOR Christopher Warren-Green, must be an exacting taskmaster, because every member played with exceptional vigour.
An excellent Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn opened.
The music sparkled and danced along, chattering woodwind and strings perfectly depicting fairies darting about in the woods.
Eminent clarinettist Michael Collins, who has played with top orchestras around the world, joined the orchestra for Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A.
His direct style and mellifluous cascades of notes invigorated a piece he must have played countless times in his long career.
Mendelssohn’s ‘Italian’ Symphony No. 4 in A Major was sheer exuberance, with the orchestra playing for all they were worth to the final dramatic end.
