The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS Published: 28 June 2007
EVERYBODY hates the kids of famous people. Generally untalented and over-indulged, they seem to get work – as musicians, actors and artists – not to mention loads of free stuff, just by bandying their name about – Geldof, Hilton, I’m talking about you.
Not so with South End Green-born and bred Rosie Oddie. First of all she wins a national singing/ songwriting competition without Daddy’s help (ornithologist and erstwhile Goodie Bill Oddie OBE). The organisers didn’t know who she was until after they’d awarded her with a contract to release her first single, Genni’s Song.
But if that’s not sign enough, A & R men – including Alan McGee, the man credited with finding Oasis – have been stumbling over themselves to sign her since she was 13 and playing the drums at her summer street parties.
It’s not that she doesn’t want the free stuff or is shunning the celeb parties – it’s just that when she gets it, she’ll
deserve it.
You can’t help but like Oddie. While we were taking some
pictures of her, by an estate just yards from her flat in Camden Town, a group of teenage boys came charging down the street.
They wanted to know if Rosie was a model. “God no, musician” was her down to earth answer.
Easy going and friendly, she had them eating out of her hands in no time.
Even if her school reports didn’t say so, she’s gonna do well.
