LILY ALLEN: SMILE
I know it’s naughty to feature signed artists two weeks’ running when this column is supposed to be all about hard-on-their-luck deserving of fame types, but there you are, tough.
Lily Allen, who lives in Islington, is set to be the new star of the summer.
I’ve been haggling with Parlophone to interview her for a couple of weeks now but apparently she’s “too busy”. Don’t forget your roots girlfriend.
Anyhow, whether or not you’ve heard her first single – LDN (London, for those of you not text-literate) about an old woman and her Tesco shopping bags – her second, Smile, will penetrate everyone’s life this summer.
A breezy dancehall feeling guides the song through a painful break-up while a simple trundling beat complements her light airy voice.
She’s commercially accessible in the same way Corinne Bailey Rae is, but without the sickly sweet drenching that gets Capital and Heart FM going.
Smile will be out on July 3. Her album, Alright, Still, is out July 17.
