Feng Sheng Princess
Right royal restaurant

It is a year since I began writing this column. So in a way I am celebrating an important date. My aim has been to bring you the very best on offer to please your palate within a medium price range.
Most of the very expensive restaurants offer a reasonably priced menu and I make use of these. Also, I usually order the house wine. I know that a lot of thought enters into choosing it and says a lot of what is to come.
I have reviewed 52 establishments of my choice – I would welcome readers’ suggestions and feedback. My criterion is quality and freshness regarding the food complimented by good service in a pleasant atmosphere.
I started this column by writing about Feng Shang Princess – the floating boat in Regent’s Canal a couple of hundred yards from London Zoo. So it seems fitting that I should revisit this lovely restaurant.
Their team of five Chinese chefs have created an exciting new menu with unique dishes not usually featured in Chinese restaurants. A Peking duck with caviar (advance booking) at £80 heads the list of several delicacies.
We started with baked king prawns covered in a crispy crust (£12), Salt and peppercorn ribs (£7) and Crispy seaweed with grated scallops (£5). The lamb chops Chinese Style are truly delicious (£14.50) which we had accompanied by Fried Noodles with Bean sprouts (£5.50) and stir fried asparagus with fresh lilies and lotus roots (£8). For a more adventurous meal you can try stir fried ostrich (£15) or Mongolian style sliced venison (£12.50).
Dining with friends I was introduced to their excellent rose wine from Provence which at £18.50 compares most favourably with the Sancerre Rose. A perfect choice for the quality food on offer.
Another interesting detail is that they are expanding their dim sum menu. With the impending arrival of a new chef from Japan, soon they will also have a selection of dishes from that country.
This restaurant which is built in the shape of a boat features two floors with striking views of Regent’s canal.
Perfect for large celebratory lunches or dinners as well as an intimate meal for two – especially if you can book table One.
