Why Figaro is truly a one-off
PREVIEW: LE NOZZE DI FIGARO Eno at the Sadler's Wells
LE Nozze di Figaro is arguably Mozart’s most popular opera. Frequently performed since it premiered in 1786 at the Burgtheatre in Vienna, it is a tumultuous mix of aristocratic farce and romantic comedy set to a wonderful score by Mozart.
Every time I see the work begin, as Figaro is on his knees measuring space for the marital bed, as bride-to-be Susanna tries on her wedding bonnet, I am thrilled with anticipation of what is to come. It’s such ludicrous fun.
And one of Britain’s best touring opera companies, the Classical Opera Company (COC) is performing its first-ever production of the work at Sadler’s Wells on Saturday.
The COC only formed in 1997 but has quickly established itself as a great organisation for young musicians, dedicated to the work of Mozart and his contemporaries.
It blends experienced and recognised performers as well as up-and-coming stars and uses a period instrument orchestra, doing their best to recreate a work’s original setting with vibrancy and colour.
Previously the company has performed Mozart’s Apollo and Hyacinthus, as well as La Finta Semplice and Il Re Pastore.
And in 2004, they performed an acclaimed Apollo to Zauberflote: An A-Z of Mozart Opera at the Barbican, exploring 14 Mozart operas with 14 different singers including Mark Padmore and Amanda Roocroft.
They launched their first cycle of the complete operatic works of Mozart, touring both the UK and Italy.
The work will be sung in Italian with English subtitles and there is just one performance.
