Dizzee dishes it up
GIG REVIEW: DIZZEE RASCAL
Koko
by Matthew Finnegan
IT’S time to dust off those Nike Air Force 1s and don that Avirex jacket once again because east London rudeboy Dizzee Rascal is back. Fresh from recording his new album Maths + English, Dizzee, aka. 20-year-old Dylan Mills, marked his return to the live scene with a gig at Camden’s Koko, declaring “This is home, shout out to the big city”.
Kicking off in explosive style with old favourite Jus’ A Rascal, Dizzee soon launched into new material that is obviously more on par with his 2003 Mercury Music Prize-winning album Boy In Da Corner than the patchier follow up Showtime.
Combining the filthiest of Grime basslines with lyrics more aggressive and menacing than a gang of 16-year-old happy-slappers, the Bow-born rapper proved yet again why he is still at the forefront of his genre.
That you were just as likely to see a pair of Converse as Reebok Classics in the crowd showed how wide an appeal the incredibly talented Dylan Mills has.
