Open Air stands up
DANIEL KITSON
Open Air Theatre
DANIEL Kitson’s show at the Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park, began with some storytelling, as the comedian was accompanied by singer-songwriter Gavin Osborn. Kitson’s narration was fast and sometimes difficult to follow but his enthusiasm was catching and his story-within-a-story proved engrossing. Osborn’s songs were often very silly, but they were an original and touching vehicle for narration.
Although the whole was very funny, laughs were secondary to narrative; Kitson and Osborn played with an old form and made it work, leaving us wanting more. There were moments when the sentimentality became cloying but for the most part the lack of cynicism was refreshing, and laugh-out-loud funny.
There’s nothing wrong with plain old stand-up but with this show Kitson offered so much more.
