GET AWAY
Old Red Lion Theatre
THE title may not be deeply unsettling, but the images printed on the play’s programme – an eerie cabin surrounded by trees – aroused my interest. David (Qarie Marshall) is single, perplexed and middle-aged and has taken refuge from a plague (which is never truly touched upon) in a furnished cabin on the edge of a forest.
Inviting two teenagers, David and Garbo, into his dwelling, the three form a strangely close bond.
This bond becomes strained as David develops an odd obsession with the two young people. Is he simply a lonely soul seeking comfort in the company of two spirited teenage drifters?
The sinister truth of his intentions unfolds as the play slowly progresses.
Having spent an hour and 45 minutes shifting uncomfortably in the heat of the theatre, I left with mixed feelings about the elusive direction of the play.
Although wrapped up neatly into a conclusion, the reaching of this conclusion was somewhat drawn out.
David’s plight as the jaded man with the odd fascination was well delivered, with a hint of humour peering through the dark, simple setting. Until July 7
