FROM THE HART
New End Theatre
LORENZ Hart, or Larry to his friends, had the body of a child and an oversized head. But he did not allow his physical awkwardness to prevent him writing a string of hits for Broadway musicals and Hollywood films in the 1920s and 30s. Larry and his partner, composer Richard Rogers (later of Rogers and Hammerstein fame), had a fruitful working relationship that lasted 24 years
They brought us hits such as Blue Moon, The Lady is a Tramp and My Funny Valentine.
These and other classics are presented at the New End Theatre in a brilliant showcase of their hits and flops. In their time, Hart and Rogers were massive in London and New York and Hart was dubbed the poet of Broadway.
His lyrical biography is presented by a quintet of singers, complete with tap dancing and ambitious leaps across the tiny stage, accompanied by piano and double bass. What becomes clear is how much songwriters draw from their own lives: “My life was my inspiration,” says Larry (John Guerrasio).
Hart was a master of his genre, writing beautiful love songs and bleak portraits of what life could be like for a single girl in New York.
He loved a good party but began to binge drink and died in November 1943 at the age of 48.
Just as he was breathing his last, a wartime blackout put out all of the lights in New York. Until September 30
