The Review - MUSIC - classical & jazz with JOEL TAYLOR Published: 14 June 2007
Schubert’s Winterreise is worth warming to
SCHUBERT’S song cycle Winterreise is one of my favourite pieces of music and I once saw an outstanding performance by German baritone Matthias Goerne accompanied by Alfred Brendel at the Wigmore Hall. But a couple of years ago tenor Stephen Brice performed an excellent interpretation of the cycle at Lauderdale House and such was its success he is appearing again on Sunday, accompanied by pianist Christopher Gould.
It is a haunting piece of music, full of imagery, loneliness and yearning, underpinned by Schubert’s astonishing melodies.
Sunday is actually a packed day of music, offering a wide variety of concerts from small ensemble pieces, and jazz.
Another worth catching is the appearance of City Waites at the Red Hedgehog in Archway, where the group will be performing music from 17th-century England, including folk songs, theatrical and court music and bawdy pieces sung in the
tavern.
