THROUGH rain, sleet or snow and despite fervent government attempts to evict him, Brian Haw has camped in Parliament Square in a one-man protest against the war. His six-year campaign is told in a new documentary premiering at the Renoir Cinema on Sunday.
SOCPA – The Movie details the events and battles around the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act Section 132, which criminalised “unauthorised” demonstrations around Parliament.
The hour-long film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Haw and filmmaker Rikki Blue.
FROM Haw to another legendary campaigner, the journalist/writer/ director John Pilger, at the Curzon Soho on Wednesday to discuss his new film, The War on Democracy. The film, co-directed by Christopher Martin, explores the true meaning of the so-called war on terror and Bush’s second inauguration pledge to “bring democracy to the world”. Pilger will be on hand to answer questions from the audience after the screening.
THE Fabulous Baker Boys shouldn’t be as good as it is. But this film about two fading cabaret performing piano playing brothers whose relationship is strained by the arrival of glamorous Michelle Pfeiffer is a cracker – at turns, funny, sad, insightful and achingly poignant. Catch it at the Library, Conway Hall, on Monday as part of the Conway Hall Jazz Appreciation Group. Call 020 7242 8032 for details.
