FANTASTIC FOUR – RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER
Directed by Tim Story
Certificate PG
FAN4, as Hollywood and those to talk in textspeak like to call it, brings our quartet of superheroes back into action, this time in pursuit of “an enigmatic intergalactic herald” calling himself the Silver Surfer.
Silver streak is more like it, as the creature (voiced by the rich tones of Laurence Fishburne) whizzes around the cosmos, bald-headed, his naked body gleaming silver, crouched like sculptor Rodin’s The Thinker on his glistening surf-board.
When he touches down on Planet Earth it’s certainly the end of global warming: Tokyo Bay freezes over in Japan, the Sphinx is covered with a shower of snow in Egypt, and L.A. is plunged into a chilly blackout.
Only the Fantastic Four, stepping out of the pages of Marvel comics, can stop him. There’s Reed (Ioan Gruffudd), who can stretch his body into any shape he wants, Storm (Jessica Alba) who can make herself invisible, Johnny (Chris Evans), a human torch who bursts into flames under stress, and Ben (Michael Chiklis), who is made of rock and has aptly acquired the nickname of The Thing. “Everywhere the Surfer goes, eight days later the planet dies,” Reed announces through gritted teeth as huge craters appear around the globe – including one by the London Eye that causes the Thames to run dry in a stunning special effects sequence.
Fear not, friends. Fan4 are on the case, though there are some rough times ahead.
It’s child’s play, of course, but mighty entertaining.
Directed with a youthful zest by Tim Story, this comic-book caper has enough witty one-liners and amusing banter to give it an edge over its rivals. If you’re into super-heroes, it just doesn’t get any better than this. |
