PREVIEW: PROMS AT ST JUDE HAMPSTEAD GARDEN SUBURB
NEXT week sees the start of the Proms at St Jude, the annual eight-day music festival in Hampstead Garden Suburb. And this year is extra special as it marks the centenary of the suburb which was founded by Dame Henrietta Barnett in 1907.
Beginning on Saturday, June 16, and centred at the marvellous Edwin Lutyens’ church, in Central Square, it features classical and jazz concerts with some of the country’s leading musicians and guided walks around the suburb.
It is a packed programme, but here are just a few to note for the diary.
The festival opens with the Haydn Chamber Orchestra, along with pianist Noriko Ogawa performing Mendelsson’s Italian Symphony and Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto.
On Sunday, June 17, there is a performance of Handel’s Messiah, with soprano Grace Davidson, mezzo-soprano Hannah Pedley, tenor Ben Johnson and bass Will Carslake.
Two of Britain’s leading singers, Dame Felicity Lott and Sir Thomas Allen will be joined by pianist Malcolm Martineau, all regulars at Wigmore Hall, performing on Monday, June 18, performing a programme of songs including works by Richard Strauss, Mozart and Shostakovich.
Pianist John Lill, fresh from his appearance at the Hampstead and Highgate Festival, is performing works by Prokofiev, Chopin and Beethoven on June 20 and the always excellent Humphrey Lyttelton and his band are performing a jazz night on June 22.
The festival was first staged in January 1993 and this year is raising money for Toynbee Hall and the North London Hospice.
There are free concerts and there also are three ‘heritage’ walks around the suburb.
