GIG REVIEW: BLACK LIPS
At Proud
by Silvia Costeloe
THERE’S a long queue of fans waiting to get into the Proud Galleries to see Black Lips on Saturday night but the guest-list queue of musos is longer still. The four lads from Georgia, USA, are hailed as the UK’s next big thing. Despite their high profile, Black Lips look totally carefree as they mess around on stage minutes before the start of their set. Along with the term ‘flower punk’ – the label they have given to their music – their irreverent attitude makes me wonder how seriously they take themselves.
Voracious licking of guitar necks aside, as soon as they start playing their concoction of punk, rock, ska, grunge and country, I know the guys are for real. Highlights are Oh Katrina, a grungy hymn to the southern states, Bad Kids, with its strong country twang, and the feel-good rock of Hippie Hippie Hoorah.
After the gig I ask Cole for the name of the last song they played. He thinks hard. “I think it’s called Not a Problem but I’m not sure.” “Not a problem,” I reply.
So what if they’re having a laugh?
