THINK you know your rights? You might think again after seeing Taking Liberties (see review, left), a polemic that sets out to expose the erosion of fundamental civil liberties after 10 years of New Labour. Timed to coincide with Tony Blair’s departure, the film follows the stories of normal people who’ve had their lives turned upside down by injustice – from being arrested for holding a placard to being tortured in Guantanamo Bay.
With a promise to challenge any notion that we live in a free society and contributions from everyone from Michael Mansfield to Boris Johnson, this is well worth a look. Catch it at the Renoir at the Brunswick or the Tricycle Cinema in Kilburn tomorrow (Friday) or go to www.noliberties.com/cinema/htm for more information.
GET a head start on your fellow film buffs by heading to the Renoir and Curzon Cinemas from tomorrow for their one-week European film fest. Focusing on films that have already been hugely successful in Europe but are yet to be released here, the programme kicks off with epic Spanish swashbuckler, Alatriste, starring Viggo (Aragorn) Mortensen tomorrow (Friday).
Other highlights include Beauty and the Bastard from Finland, Schnitzel Paradise from the Netherlands and French/ Romanian collaboration, Love Sick.
