The life of five
THE B FILE Etcetera Theatre
THE B File is an exploration of one character, Beatrice, played in five different ways. As each confused, frustrated and unfulfilled version of the play’s only protagonist takes centre stage we are shown a different stereotypical image of femininity and asked whether we are seeing a character or a persona.
Each performer seems to contain elements of both, and once interrogated by the fifth, cracks in their fantasy world begin to emerge.
Laura Murray is particularly impressive as the fourth installation, playing a bitter, aggressive American who wages a relentless campaign to destroy the fantasies of her on-stage predecessor.
The play is sparse when it comes to mise-en-scene but the occasional burst of music by French singer Manu Chao gives it a fresh, trendy feel.
It felt pleasantly awkward to be confronted by the cast sitting around the stage in darkness before the performance started and the Etcetera Theatre’s intimate setting for this thought provoking and emotional play.
The small performance room gives The B File the perfect platform for powerful singing and dramatic speeches and it is a thoroughly enjoyable watch. Until June 17
