The Review - THEATRE by NATALIE LI

Preposterous but pleasing pirate play

BLUE BEARD
Old Red Lion

FLUFF productions return to the Old Red Lion with a wonderful piece of escapist drama.
Dark and richly enigmatic from the outset, the lives of three sheltered young girls – Piglet, Monkey and Rooster – are intensely drawn through a world where the arcane old lady Blue and her stiff assistant Miss King rule the lives of the girls.
Enter the outsider, Mignon (Rebecca Dunn) who is about to turn their view of normality upside down, unveiling some horrid truths.
Writer Pericles Snowdon has created this magical land where castle walls hide the lies of the outside where evil and pain once existed.
Brightly adorned, the strong cast of solidly pull together the fantastical element notably Emily North who plays the innocent Piglet.
The appeal of this play lies in the characters and the world they inhabit, subtly touching on darker issues and somewhat feminist in its approach.
Sparkling from beginning to end there is no stopping this dynamic group of young actresses whose comic timing is spot on.
The challenge for the audience lies in unravelling the play’s obscurities and plunging oneself in this abstract world.
