The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS Published: 31 May 2007
STOP The War Coalition, a highly respected movement calling for the return of British troops from Iraq, puts on a fundraising show on Monday. The organisation put the money raised at these benefit nights towards staging marches, rallies and general noise. The artists who take part – who have included Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Roxy Music’s Brian Eno, and quirky popsters Belle & Sebastian – all do it for free, and are often the ones to call the organisers first.
But the tricky part could be the much-debated question: is bringing the troops home now the best thing for the Iraqi people? David Wilson, spokesman for the Coalition, made it clear things couldn’t be much worse out there. “The most respected figure, released last year in The Lancet, is 650,000” – Iraqi dead, that is.
“This has been a disaster from beginning to end. There were no weapons of mass destruction, and people should remember we went in illegally,” he warned. “What on earth are we doing there?”
When pressed on whether British soldiers heighten the danger in Iraq, he said: “Our troops are not there as boy scouts. They’re there as part of a colonial occupation. It’s the bloody slaughter of Iraqis as a result of western intervention.”
