ALBUM REVIEW: THE MACCABEES Colour It In
by Matthew Finnegan
THERE is a charming, almost childlike innocence at play on The Maccabees’ long-awaited first album. Lead singer Orlando Weeks tells tales of first love, Scalextric and even the wave machine at Battersea’s Latchmere Leisure Centre swimming pool. This playfulness should not be mistaken for mere simplicity though.
Colour It In exhibits intricacies that betray their matching ages of just 21, lyrically as well as in the jaunty melodic guitars and Bloc Party-esque drum rhythms.
The Maccabees certainly share similarities with other post-Strokes London bands such as The Rakes, but this a good thing in their case as they have also managed to produce an immensely enjoyable LP.
While Weeks’ delicate, wavering voice can perhaps be seen as an acquired taste, the heartfelt catchiness of these songs is hard to resist. Perfect soundtrack for the oncoming summer.
