The Thief Lord
THERE is an element of Charles Dickens hanging over the Thief Lord.
Think of a modern day Fagin complete with Artful Dodger and the story becomes obvious. But for the children who this flick is aimed at, the Thief Lord is enterprising, watchable and holds some classic child’s story elements.
Bo and Prosper are the two children who are recently orphaned.
As is the usual form for this type of movie, the pair were going to be handed over to a cruel old aunt: but they escape to Venice where they fall into a gang of loveable street urchin robbers.
And things get exciting when they become embroiled in a magical device that can bend time itself.
Fantasy writer Cornelia Funke has borrowed from many recurring themes in children stories: it is not for nothing she is known as Germany’s answer to JK Rowling.
Curious George
THIS little comic caper stars a cute monkey who is the side-kick to the Man in a Yellow Hat. He is a strange character who has to spend his life keeping the hairy little chap out of danger.
Will Ferrell lends his voice to the show as the lead in a charming and original children’s cartoon.
Friends With Money
This film has the appearance of a feature length episode of Friends, and it is not just the appearance of Jennifer Aniston as a rather dippy and annoying person with shallow aims.
She is (understandably) single, and the comedy revolves mainly around her relationship with her married friends.
