The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS Published: 24 May 2007
LAST week’s interview with Ny has drawn the attention of the bigwigs at the Roundhouse.
She might not be performing on the Chalk Farm venue’s mainstage just yet, but she has been called inspirational. Ben Mullon, a Roundhouse teacher, had nothing but praise for the Kentish Town singer, who he said “raised some issues of real concern to young people today, and she also has some interesting views of life”.
Ny, a one-time Parliament Hill pupil, thinks tough-acting youngsters should be made to see they don’t live in the ‘ghetto’ by trips to deprived areas in Africa.
Mr Mullon went on: “I mentor many young producers and it’s great to hear about a local artist doing well.
“She will be an inspiration to others from the area who are serious about their music.”
I’m also rather sad to see the end of Chalk at the Scala in King’s Cross.
There aren’t that many nights like that, featuring more urban music, and as Dj Ed Adoo said a few weeks ago, venues seem to shy away from putting those nights on.
Here’s hoping someone else takes up the mantle.
