Composer of passion
PREVIEW: VALERY GERGIEV
ST Luke’s
MUSIC lovers will have the rare opportunity to see one of the world’s leading conductors in rehearsal at St Luke’s on Friday next.
For more than 20 years, Valery Gergiev (pictured) has established himself as a premier conductor, working with the Kirov, now Mariinsky Opera, the Armenian State Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera and since 2005 has been the principal conductor of the London Symphony.
His style can be abrasive and passionate – well suited to Russian and Eastern European styles of music. He quotes Prokofiev as his favourite composer.
On Friday he will be appearing at Jerwood Hall in St Luke’s leading the orchestra in an open rehearsal which will give an insight into the workings of the orchestra.
Music expected to be performed on the night includes Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex and Symphony in C, Debussy’s Le Martye de Saint Sebastian and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, in preparation for a pair of concerts at the Barbican on May 13 and 14.
The tickets are free but can only be booked in advance.
