PREVIEW: THE GOOD SHIP
‘ALL aboard the Good Ship’ goes the advertising slogan, and on the strength of the upcoming shows, I’ll be booking my cabin. The Good Ship in Kilburn High Road – formerly the dive that was Zinc bar – has been putting on inspired and original shows every day for months, the most intriguing of which is the Burlesque night called the Hootchy-Koo Revue.
Due to become a residency there in August, organiser and central star Delores Delight (pictured) is overjoyed at the resurgence of the genre. She said: “It’s having a revival. It began with Dita Von Teese (ex-wife of shock rocker Marilyn Manson) and it’s done wonders for the circuit.”
But she was at pains to point out that American shows are far more erotic than British ones, and disliked notions that burlesque was about sex. “It’s not all about striptease – we’re not strippers or lapdancers – it’s a very sophisticated show about parody and comedy. It’s not about being able to bump and grind in a g-string. It’s always cheeky rather than suggestive.”
