DJ Edward Adoo outside The Camden Stores on Parkway
There’s much ado about Ed Adoo

INTERVIEW: EDWARD ADOO

EDWARD Adoo is a DJ living in Cricklewood who went to St George’s school in Maida Vale. He has just started a new Sunday session, What Sunday’s Are Made For, at Bar Eclipse in West End Lane in West Hampstead, which runs from 4pm until 10.30pm. He also plays at The Kilburn in Kilburn, Jay Cubed in Angel, Islington, and the Light Bar in Shoreditch. For more details, go to www.myspace.com/edwardadoodjinfo

Tell me what you’re doing at Eclipse.
EA:
West Hampstead needs a new vibe. I just want people to come – music, Sunday, chill. The coolest place in town is The Lodge in Harlesden, I want to match that.

CC: Bar Eclipse, which used to be Cane, seemed to go a bit downhill towards the end?
EA: I don’t know the guys who ran it before but it just seemed there were pretentious people inside and they kind of excluded West Hampstead from going in.

CC: What’s your ‘killer’ track?
EA: Everybody Loves The Sunshine by Roy Ayers.

CC: How do you find the music scene in Camden?
EA: I’ve approached so many venues about Dj-ing dance and electronica, but unless it’s a guitar band there’s some prejudice against hip hop,
r ‘n’ b and dance. There aren’t many opportunities for new talent and promoters to come.
Venues are not brave enough. They check out the news, and go ‘no glowstick – too many drugs’, or ‘no hip hop – too violent’. If there’s a new DJ, a new rapper or a new guitar band, who will go through the door first? It’s blatantly the guitar band.

CC: Isn’t it just about demand?
EA: If you don’t put things on people don’t know about it. People say ‘we don’t want anything too dark or excessive, we don’t want gangsta rap or house’. When I do my sets you get more support from A-list venues than normal ones. If they could work together and push something that would be great.
