HE may have just turned 82, but veteran British socialist Tony Benn shows no sign of slowing down. The former politico is guest speaker at a London Socialist film co-op screening of Martin Ritt’s McCarthyite drama, The Front, at the Renoir on Sunday, featuring Woody Allen in a rare straight role.
The film examines the consequences of Senator McCarthy’s anti-Communist hysteria through the experiences of a small-time bookmaker (played by Allen) who becomes a front for blacklisted writers. There is footage of the original Hollywood Ten blacklisted screenwriters and a clip of George Galloway taking on the Senate committee in 2005.
THE Everyman in Hampstead’s Screen Salon season is focusing on Hollywood blockbusters this month with an eclectic selection of films that kicks off with everyone’s favourite musical: Singing in the Rain.
Like that other enduring classic, Casablanca, this is a film that simply refuses to date. Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds have been deservedly feted for the incredible dance sequences but look out for Jean Hagen as the movie star with a voice for silent movies who finds the transition to talkies a little difficult…
