Compelling ‘crap’
FAST FOOD NATION
Directed by Richard Linklater
Certificate 15
BIG Ones and Big Tyres – that’s the world of this junk food oddity, but it has nothing to do with crash diets. These are monster burgers dreamed up by a fast food-chain which finds that business has been dropping off the plate.
They despatch marketing executive Greg Kinnear to their meat packing factory in Colorado, where he finds to his dismay that cow manure has been mixed into the burgers – nobody cares. “Our meat is crap, literally,” declares an unrepentant Bruce Willis, in the role of the plant manager. “Just cook it, and you’ll be fine!”
One of the most talked-about festival films (Cannes, London, Glasgow, Dublin) and containing grisly scenes inside an abattoir, this oddly compelling if disjointed (oops) takeaway is not one for the squeamish. Or for vegetarians.
