DANIEL Radcliffe and Sir Donald Sinden hosted the tenth Theatre Book Prize at the Theatre Museum on Thursday.
Radliffe, the 17-year-old actor famed from Harry Potter bounded on stage wearing a pink T-shirt under a smart grey suit, and said: “I’d like to announce that the winner of the Theatre Book Prize is John Osborne: A Patriot for Us, by John Heilpern.”
It tells the story of Osborne, a young journalist, who became a playwright and theatre critic.
His play Look Back in Anger changed the face of modern British Theatre. Theatre director Bill Bryden accepted the award in Mr Helpern’s absence.
The presentation, in the bowels of the Theatre Museum, was tinged with sadness.
This may be the last Book Prize presentation to be held in the historic site after its owners, the V&A Museum, pulled the plug on the historic archive.
There had been talks to move the museum to Blackpool.
But Sir Donald Sinden said there was still hope of keeping it in Covent Garden.
He said: “Unless a miracle happens this will be the last Theatre Book Prize held here. But we can produce that miracle. “We need £600,000, not a lot of money, to keep the Theatre Museum where it belongs. “SO dig deep!”
