Jazz with Melly this Monday
PREVIEW: JOHN CHILTON
Ray’s Jazz
FOR 30 years, every time George Melly clambered on to Ronnie Scott’s stage for the annual New Year’s Eve concert, he was supported by John Chilton and his band the Feetwarmers.
But not only is he an accomplished cornet player and band leader, John Chilton is one of the leading jazz writers and has written celebrated figures on characters such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday and Coleman Hawkins.
On Monday evening he will be at Ray’s Jazz, at Foyles in Charing Cross Road, to launch his biography, Hot Jazz/Warm Feet, charting his remarkable life in jazz.
As ever with events at Ray’s, it is free so to make sure you get in, arrive early. And for an extra special treat, music will be provided by John Chilton on cornet, with clarinettists Wally Fawkes – aka the cartoonist Trog – and pianist Doug Murray.
It’s even possible Mr Melly himself might turn up so it could be quite an evening. The event, on Monday April 23, begins at 6pm.
