The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS Published: 19 April 2007
HELLO Camden Crawlers. Howdy do to you all. For those of you not from Camden, please take your rubbish home with you.
So. Secret headliners. Who better to do a headline gig at the Crawl than Amy Winehouse, an artist not unfamiliar with Camden pubs and clubs – the Crawl, then, shouldn’t be too out of her usual night.
Other secret performers – some not so secret anymore – are Travis, Babyshambles, Charlatans, Ash and Billy Bragg.
The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are one of California’s most promising bands. Living in LA, they are big on the ‘cool’ circuit: ie not pop (their highest charting record was Stop in ’03, which reached 19 in the UK).
Likened to The Doors, Bob Dylan and the White Stripes, there’s no real way of categorising them except to say they cover the gamut of rocky, garage folk. Whatever that means – hey, I just like them because they have a token English drummer called Nick, from Devon.
But who else is worth seeing and who won’t blow your beer-soaked socks off? Air Traffic, Foals, The Hot Puppies, Marvin the Martian, Jack Penate, along with lots more are all worth queuing up for.
In the last two years Supergrass, Dirty Pretty Things and Graham Coxon have all headlined and they were great nights, so see you down there.
NB: Sorry everyone, Patti Smith’s gig at the Roundhouse is on May 17, not April as I said last week. Whoops.
