IKE Turner has come a long way since his humble beginnings as an eight-year-old in Clarksdale Mississippi’s WROX radio station.
Turner’s stock began to rise with his first hit Rocket 88 (a song widely considered to be one of the earliest examples of Rock n’ Roll) and during the 1960s he experienced great success with The Ike and Tina Review – Motown’s equivalent of the Donny and Marie show.
However, a very public split from Tina Turner followed by an even more public divorce saw the hits dry up for Ike.
It was not until 2001 when he released his Grammy-nominated album Here and Now that Turner returned to the music scene and showcased exactly why he is considered one of the greats.
The years since have seen his induction into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, a Heroes Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, an appearance on the Gorillaz Demon Days album, a rumoured collaboration with blues-rockers The Black Keys and a further Grammy for 2007’s Rising With The Blues.
It’s been a long time coming, but the Father of Rock n’ Roll is definitely back to his best.
