Occult goings-on reap no rewards
THE REAPING Directed by Stephen Hopkins
Certificate 15
'THERE'S somethin’ unnatural goin’ on out there,” observes the redneck sheriff astutely, as an entire five-mile stretch of river turns blood red and dead fish float to the surface on the edge of town.
Give the man a cigar. But occult investigator Hilary Swank is already on the case, summoned in after a boy is found murdered on the river bank with his teenage sister (Anna Robb) suspected of a ritual killing.
Plague and pestilence are unleashed across the land. People collapse and die in the local library, their faces blotchy with huge boils. Nasty. Locusts swarm in from nowhere. Alas, one or two jumpy moments scarcely make up for a film that is too risible to be taken seriously.
