Harry Olmer and Ester Holtzberg |
Holocaust survivor has an unexpected reunion
A HOLOCAUST survivor from a small village in Poland was reunited
with a family member in a surprise epilogue at Pentameters
Theatre, Hampstead.
Ester Holtzberg, 80, went to the theatre recently to see a production
of a play about her own experiences under Nazi occupation during
World War II.
Ms Holtzberg, who lives in Israel, decided to tell her harrowing
tale after hearing that British historian David Irving had denied
the holocaust happened.
An emotional Ms Holtzberg, 80, took questions on stage after
watching the Pentameters performance. But the questions
took an interesting twist when one man quizzed Ms Holtzberg
about her family name.
Harry Olmer, who lives in Mill Hill, revealed his mother had
lived in Slomnicki, a small village outside Krakov, Poland,
and had the same name: Hannah Yakobouitz.
The pair met on stage and found both their family businesses
were tailoring.
Mr Olmer said: I am sure we must be related. There were
only about 1,000 Jews living in Solmnicki at the time and both
our mothers worked in tailoring.
Ms Holtzberg said: I dont think it can be the same
mother because of the age difference. But Hannah ran through
our family and I had an aunt with that name. We must be cousins.
