hot shot Ne-yo takes it to another level with his debut album
In My Words.
Although he is responsible for possibly the best R’n’B
song of the year so far – So Sick – which I could
listen to for hours and is currently number one, most of this
is chaff.
I only recommend it if you’re planning a long weekend indoors
(and outdoors too no doubt if you’re Ne-yo).
Worst offender, Mirror, catches up with our hero serenading
his lady friend with requests to get jiggy in front of the mirror
“so I can watch you enjoying me”.
Obviously a big talent, he has written songs for the discerning
Mary J Blige, Faith Evans, and Musiq Soulchild, as well as penning
last year’s smash hit Mario’s Let Me Love You.
Considering his idols are soul gods Stevie Wonder and Marvin
Gaye, surely asking for a bit of class and depth isn’t
too much then?
To get this straight, I don’t have a problem with freaky
songs – no one does it better than Prince – but you’ve
gotta do it with a sense of humour or you just look stupid.
Ne-yo, go and have a cold shower.
