Memorable Macy’s back
PREVIEW: MACY GRAY
KOKO
by Rory Carroll
SHE was Amy Winehouse before it was cool to be Amy Winehouse, and after several years away from the music scene, Macy Gray is back to play a one-off show at Koko.
It’s been a rocky few years for the gravelly voiced singer. In 1999 she received nominations for both Song and Record of the Year and saw her Grammy winning single I Try dominate charts and airwaves the world over.
However, after forgetting the words to the American national anthem at the 2001 NFL Football Hall of Fame, Gray spent the following years wandering the musical wilderness and struggled to claw her way back into the US charts.
Four years have passed since her last release, but Gray has returned and her new album BIG is expected to be just that. Produced by Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am and featuring further input from heavyweights Natalie Cole, Nas and Justin Timberlake, Gray is undoubtedly back to her soulful best.
Gray has one of the most mesmerizing and unique voices of the past decade and with a hair-do as big as Koko’s giant glitter ball, Tuesday’s show is sure to be a memorable one.
