Pick of the Indies
FRENCH movie fans are in for a treat this week with a short festival celebrating all thing Gallic at the Curzon Mayfair until Sunday.
A Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, which kicks off today (Thursday), is a celebration of contemporary French cinema. So, sadly, no Nouvelle Vague classics on offer.
Instead, there’s a biopic of Edith Piaf, titled, somewhat predictably, La Vie en Rose, a homage to Nouvelle vague comedies in Dans Paris and the enjoyable thriller Tell No One (Ne le Dis a Personne), amongst others.
There’s also a short films programme and several screenings will be attended by directors and actors who are expected to take part in post-screening master classes and discussions. Vive La France!
Die-hard fans of wacky Finnish director Aki Karurismaki meanwhile should head to the Curzon Soho on Sunday for a four-hour plus Kaurismaki marathon that includes Drifting Clouds, The Man without a Past and Lights in the Dark.
Finally, to mark the 40th anniversary of playwright Joe Orton’s death, a digitally restored and re-mastered version of Stephen Frear’s 1987 biopic, Prick Up Your Ears (with a searing performance from Gary Oldman as the irreverent, charismatic Orton) is showing at the Institute of Contemporary Arts from next Friday (April 6). |
