Handels
high-pitched stars where the toast of Europe
THESE days the headlines in the opera world are dominated
by the booming tenors and soaring sopranos but in the 18th century
the performers who attracted all the attention were the castrati.
These were young men, plucked out during boyhood, and chosen
to be singers for composers, an instrument composers lack these
days.
They became incredible stars and travelled across Europe performing
to huge audiences.
And on Wednesday the Handel House Museum, in Brook Street, Mayfair,
is opening a new exhibition and Handel and his relationship
with castrati. In April there will be a series of events and
concerts, talks and shows.
